About This Quote

Then Carrot said, "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness, captain. That's what they say.""What?" Vimes' sudden rage was like a thunderclap. "Who says that? When has that ever been true? It's never been true! It's the kind of thing people without power say to make it all seem less bloody awful, but it's just words, it never makes any difference - In the year of our Lord 1112 AD, a small band of farmers from Lincolnshire arrived in London. They were led by a man known as Eustace Clarence Scrubb.

He had travelled thousands of miles from his home in Scrubbs End to seek his fortune as a merchant sailor. But this was not a sea voyage – he was going to fight in the Crusades for the king of Jerusalem.   As the group sailed down the Thames on their way to join King Richard I in his army, a storm blew up and capsized their boat.

It sank beneath the waves, but the pilgrims quickly gathered themselves together and continued along the banks on foot. After three days of walking, they reached London Bridge and found themselves in quite an unfamiliar part of town. "I wonder where we are," said one of them. "This is an altogether different place from Scrubbs End." "It is indeed," said another.

"And how will we know which direction we should take?" "We'll come across the river again soon enough," said Eustace Clarence Scrubb. "We can't go wrong." The pilgrims set out along the South Bank and reached St Paul’s Cathedral without any further mishaps. As they walked through its great doors, one of them stopped and looked up at its great bell tower. "What's that noise?" he asked his fellow pilgrims, who all stopped to listen too. "Sounds like singing," said one of them. "I hear nothing but noise!" said another pilgrim with irritation, but then he recognized the voice that was coming from above: it was that of their group leader Eustace Clarence Scrubb himself! . "Captain Vimes will give us good employment for our money! Captain Vimes will find us excellent lodgings!" sang Eustace Clarence Scrubb with gusto, as if he were performing on stage in front of an audience! .

The pilgrims listened open-mouthed
